Until recently, the main mode of transportation for the disabled was wheelchairs. Not anymore. Thanks to the amigo scooter, transportation among the disabled has been changed forever. If you’ve never heard of the Amigo scooter, it is a mobility scooter with an aid that is equivalent to a wheelchair only that it is configured to look like a motor scooter.
The basic description of this scooter is that it moves on either three, four or even five wheels depending on the preference of the user. Just like your average scooter, it has handle bars for navigation that are used to manoeuvre either two or three front steerable wheels. Unlike the average scooter, the seat has been specially designed to swivel to allow the user to easily get on and off. Also, unlike your basic scooter, these scooters are battery charged so they cannot be used to travel long distances. Gasoline powered amigo scooters are also available although they are quickly being phased out by the electric models for environmental and safety reasons.
The amigo scooter is meant to assist people with mobility problems to get around much more easily. They are mainly used to transport the old over short distances such as from the outside to the inside of a hospital or even a house. They are especially used by people suffering from whole body disabling conditions such as arthritis, lung cancer and in some cases obesity who are still able to walk a few steps, sit upright without any support and have the ability to control a steering tiller.
How does the amigo scooter compare to the powered wheelchair? While both are effective in transportation, the amigo scooter has more leverage over the powered wheelchair. First, it is more affordable than the powered wheelchair. Second, amigo scooters do not resemble wheelchairs in any shape or form. Wheelchairs have been associated with a certain disability stigma and they are sometimes frowned upon by others who view them as shameful. This bias is not associated with these scooters.
