Doctors advise their patients to use a nebulizer instead of taking pills orally since medicines administered from these machines act faster on the lungs and breathing airways. An adult nebulizer is necessary to be just at an arm’s reach, so to speak, for people with chronic breathing problems especially the old adults. These are normally used in medical cases like bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis but is most popularly used in treating asthma.
A nebulizer designed for adult use has a mouth piece tool at one of end of a tube which allows the medication, transformed into a mist, to be administered directly into the mouth. The same equipment that is designed for children utilizes not a mouth piece but a mask. This is especially for very young children who are unable to hold and bite on the mouth piece to consume the mist.
The use of masks is supposed to be only for young children but a lot of adults use them too. This process, however, has a tendency for some amount of the mist to be wasted when dispensed in the air. Also, the medication is usually intended to treat the lungs and because of this, the use of a mouth piece is better as this facilitates a more direct connection to the lungs when inhalations are done through the mouth.
An adult nebulizer can be transformed and be suited for young children’s use if the attached tubing for inhalation is also adhered to the mask as well. But whether this is to be used by an adult or a child, always be careful on the dosage of medication to be administered because the result of a wrong amount can be fatal.
